Dino Talk Jan 5-7, 2002: A Dinosaur Forum

no one is posting anthing on the fave dino forum but me~!
from Gianna, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 7, 2002

***Hello dis is Sol...DinoSol***
Hahahahaha, always wanted to type that down, proabably sounded stupid, but its funny for me. Hmm...I don't know what has been happening for the past few weeks, but the thing about the Tyrannosaurus Rex not having feathers, I believe is more blievable, for there is no T-Rex specimen that was ever found to have feather fossilization imprints with it. It seems to me that if there was a large bipedal dinosaur that was as large as a T-Rex to have feathers would be really cool and interesting.
Now, on to more interesting news and theories that I have found. The Yucatan crater is the result of an impact some 65 million years ago. The crater has an estimated diameter of more than 125 miles (200 km). Most scientists think that as a result of the impact about 60 percent of all recorded species on the earth disappeared, more in North America that other parts of the Earth. While researchers agree that vast amounts of dust and debris were sent shooting into the atmosphere, the actual mechanics of how this may have caused a global catastrophe have remained obscure.
The researchers hope that examination of core samples will give scientists a better understanding of the chemical make-up of the material involved. New studies indicates that Chicxulub impact crater is smaller than once thought, making dinosaur extinction difficult to explain completely. Rock and dust alone from Chicxulub probably would not have been sufficient to snuff out life on the other side of the globe. However its also possible that the Deccan traps of India, huge masses of volcanic rock which was ejected from the Earth at the other side of the world played a role in the K/T mass extinction.
Drilling around the Yucatan crater indicates the presence of carbonates and sulfate rocks. The old theories about a nuclear winter-type global cooling has competition from a new theory of released chemicals that produce sulfur and the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.
Also, it seems a new specimen has been found in italy, nicknamed Saltriosaurus, its bones date back to the early Jurrasic. a time in which University of Maryland paleontologist Thomas Holtz calls a "critical time for the evolution of large meat-eating dinosaurs. It was during this time that theropods began evolving into large predators." Saltriosaurus may also help reconstruct the past geologic history of Italy. Until this discovery, it was thought that the modern day country of Italy had been composed of numerous small islands during the Early Jurassic. If this is true, then huge surges of land strecthed through the Jurrasic. Some scientist theorize that such a large carnivore could not have survived long if Italy was made up of just mere islands. Well, this is all the info and reading I've been doing, til next I write, see you dino fans later. Bye Bye. *_*

The dino guy who needs another christmas vacation, cuz he's too tired to go back to college... :)

I couldn't find that e-mail address in our database of supporters. Let me know if we've made a mistake. JC

Have you ever noticed that in Star Trk, they never ever encountered a dinosaur type animal on any planet. Or did I miss one.? That would make a really great episode, they'd go to another planet and be in a Cretaaceous type environment and battle a T. rex type animal. Also, how about best dinosaur name?
from Jason, age 13, ?, ?, ?, ; January 7, 2002

"usually people don't reply to their own messages..."
Well...you did once. But that's not really important.

from Tim M., age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 7, 2002

"Who here thinks TRex had feathers? I think it would look worse with them but it did have them"

1) There's no proof.
2) I can't think of any use a large theropod could have with feathers.

I don't think so. And not only because I agree that he wouldn't look so cool with feathers.
from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 7, 2002

"oh dear, poor other 900 dinosaurs"

Well, you don't have to tease.
from Gianna, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 7, 2002

"do any of you come here in the morning?"

Sometimes going on this site is the first thing I do in the morning, but sometimes, (like today,) I only manage to get on here in the evening. Now school's (<-- Groan!) coming up some days I won't even manage to come here at all.
from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 7, 2002

~~~| Welcome back Tom G! |~~~
Are you a NATIVE new zealander by the way?
from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 7, 2002
Actually, Lophorhothon does mean "crested snout," (cephalus is head,)
but I thought I'd let it go.
from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 7, 2002
"do any of you come here in the morning?"
I come here whenever I get the chance, morning or not. During vacations I usually come here in the morning because it's the only time I don't have another activity.
from Tim M., age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
I guess I should have been more clear. I didn't mean Velociraptor was not deadly, I meant to say that I would disagree when someone said they were the most deadly. Of course Velociraptor is deadly!
from Tim M., age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
"Who here thinks TRex had feathers?"
Not me. There's no evidence.
from gianna, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
WHAT?
I thought da masta did the message, usually people don't reply to their own messages(nothing against you Tim).
from Gianna, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
"I wouldn't be dissappointed at anyone coming back Joe Bob."
Yeah, but if people like Honkie Tong had still been here, they would be disappointed. I used to have a bunch of arguments* with Honkie too...
*If you're curious, check the fave dino archives.
from JOE BOB B., age 10, Menlo Park, I'm not telling, ?; January 6, 2002
"2. Khaan means master, or ruler, which is pretty cool (i forget which language, probably mongolian"
It is in mongolian because I think medievil mongolian rulers had Khaan at the end of their name like Genghis (spelling?) Khaan.
from Tom G, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
Who here thinks TRex had feathers? I think it would look worse with them but it did have them
from Tom G, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
Gianna I post in the morning here. it is morning right now here and JC why does it come up with that novel when i click on "click here to add your story to this page" on my fiction page?
from Tom G, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
I'll fix it. JC
"If you could name a dinosaur, what would you call it? I'll have to think about what I would to call mine, but I know it wont have saurus in it."
It depends what the dinosaur is like. I would make the name be in the native language of the country it was found in like if i could name a New Zealand dino i would call it something in maori.
from Tom G, age ?, ?, ?,; January 6, 2002
I'm back :)
I agree with da masta on how fast raptors could run.
from Tom G, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
do any of you come here in the morning?
from gianna, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
Ohhhh, sorry Gianna, I thought that you thought that the message which was a ? mark was mine, but now I've read everything and I get it.
So it was Tim who did the message, (I thought that it was someone posing as me, I must be paranoid!) sorry for my misunderstanding everyone.
from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
"Hello, JOE BOB B.
Dromeosaurids are definetly interesting. Which one of them is your favorite.
Just to tell you, I firmly diasagree when people say Velociraptor is very deadly,*DESPITE MY THEORY ABOUT VELOCIRAPTORS ONLY HUNTING SMALL PREY, I DISAGREE. YOUR PET PUSSY CAT IS A POTENTIALLY DEADLY CREATURE.* I think only the larger, more robust dromeosaurids could take down animals larger than themselves.*NOT BEING ABLE TO TAKE ON ANIMALS LARGER THAN YOURSELF DOES NOT REALLY MAKE YOU NOT VERY DEADLY. BUT I DO SEE WHAT YOU MEAN, MAYBE I TOOK WHAT YOU SAID A LITTLE TO THE EXTREME, SORRY.*"
from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
D'oh, I'm wrong!
ONLY modern horses, ponies and asses are called Equus!
from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
"Come to think of it, Equus arabia is a Pony. Isn't it?"
All modern and most extinct horses, ponies, and asses are called Equus.
from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
I wouldn't be dissappointed at anyone coming back Joe Bob.
from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
Good on the trivia Tim.
from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
"Yeah, but ponies had much stockier legs than equus"
I don't mean to be picky, but,you can't say "equus" here, because there are several different species. I think you mean Equus caballas, which is the horse."
Yes, the main horse which usually springs to mind when someone mentions a "horse." That's the one I meant.
from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
Even though people now know that dinosaurs aren't big lizards, (I'm not talking about the poeple around me every day by the way :-( ,) saurus has become the accepted term for dinosaurs, so if it was big, "Megalosaurus," if it was small, "Mussaurus," etc.
"If you could name a dinosaur, what would you call it? I'll have to think about what I would to call mine, but I know it wont have saurus in it."
Depends on the dinosaur. If it was a docile plant-eater, it would be stupid to call it "feroucious lizard," for example.
from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
"I agree with da masta but come on!"'
Weird... I thought I posted than on the "Vote for your favorite dinosaur" section. I'll be more careful next time."
What? Who is this guy?
Gianna, I thought you knew me!
I ALWAYS put "da masta" on my posts. If I forget, there's always a post IMMEDIATELY after telling everyone that it was me.
from da masta, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
"Tim replied to it here."
Well, I thought I had replied to it on the favorite dinosaur section but I guess not.
from Tim M., age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 6, 2002
YOU DID do it on the favorite dino section, da masta, Tim replied to it here(?).
from Gianna, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 5, 2002
from Tim M., age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 5, 2002
Yes, sorry to disappoint you, I'm back. On the subject of raptor speed, I agree with Da Masta. Even though I'm a big raptor fan, I agree that running at 35 mph for short bursts would be more realistic than running faster than that all the time.
from JOE BOB B., age 10, Menlo Park, You figure it out.; January 5, 2002
"3) What was a Stenopterygius?"
Some kind of prehistoric Marine reptile, I think it's an Icthyosaur.
(I apologise if this is the second time I tried to answer the trivia, but I'm not sure if it got through the last time...)
from Tim M., age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 5, 2002
"Trivia.
1)What does Lophorhothon's name mean?"
Crested Lizard.
"2)This:Dynamosaurus imperiosus
is an incorrect name for what?"
T-rex.
from Tim M., age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 5, 2002
"Yeah, but ponies had much stockier legs than equus"
from Tim M., age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 5, 2002
Well, I've been trying to get a rough tally of ALL dinosaurs, and only Dinosaurs.
So, when reaserching the total of Non-Neornithean Orthidire, I got results ranging from 916 to 932.
For Birds I got results in and around 2100 genera.
Therefore, that would mean that the total would probably be in beetween 3000 and 3100, but this is very inaccurate. I'll keep trying.
from Tim M., age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 5, 2002
If you could name a dinosaur, what would you call it? I'll have to think about what I would to call mine, but I know it wont have saurus in it.
from Jason, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 5, 2002
1. Its great to have more dinosaurs that don';t end in saurus, which i'm sick of. Wasnt putting saurus in the name a mistake back from when they scientists thought theywere just big lizards? 2. Khaan means master, or ruler, which is pretty cool (i forget which language, probably mongolian).
from Jason, age ?, ?, ?, ?; January 5, 2002
Jason, I'm not really a trekkie (yeah, actually, I'm not!)
but I sometimes watch some of the shows (at irregular times) and I've seen Insurrection. So I know a bit about it. What's so cool about Khaan? (Yes, I know, to me if it's a dinosaur it's automatically cool, but I'm just wondering what distinguishes Khaan? Some unusual characteristic, or it's the bset at something, or it breaks some kind of record, or you just think it's really cool but you don't know why?)
