Canis Major is a constellation in the Northern Hemisphere. Canis Major means "great dog." Connect the dots and see if you can imagine a dog in these stars. Sirius is the dog's nose, Mirzam and Furud are two of the paws, and the tail ends in Aludra.

The brightest star in the Canis Major is Sirius; Sirius is also the brightest star in the sky. Sirius is also called the dog star.

Canis Major is located near the constellation Orion. Canis Major is one of the constellation Orion's hunting dogs (together with Canis Minor).

Throughout history, people have given names to groups of stars in the sky. A constellation is a group of stars that we see in the sky. These stars are not necessarily located together in space, but they look as though they are a group when seen from Earth. See if you can find these stars in the night sky of the Northern Hemisphere.
