from James C, age 9, Wodonga, Victoria, Australia; November 19, 2000

Actually, P., if your Velociraptors really had any brains liek you said, they would not take Tyrannosaurus at any cost. Tyrannosaurus will make hamburger of them. At only three feet tall, even a pack of Velociraptors will be classified as a minor irration by a healthy Tyrannosaurus Rex. If they foolish decide to fight,(not very smart raptors)how did they attack? We now know that the raptors did not use their toe-claws to slash. All is said and done, here is another vote for Tyrannosaurus Rex Osborn.
from Honkie Tong, age 16, ?, ?, ?; November 19, 2000

Calm down guys, we'll settle this in the next DinoWarz. As you know, raptors are staple food for Tyrannosaurus. Keep Voting for him! Here's one more vote!
from Billy Macdraw, age 18, ?, ?, ?; November 19, 2000

t-REX. IGNORE P. every word out of his mouth is ah, lets finely put it...rubbish and nonsense.
from Nopaulallowedhere, age nopaul, nopaul, nopaul, nopaul; November 19, 2000

Tyrannosaurus, because he was more pratical than the raptors. Now the raptors were dumber than a crow. Do you see crows hunt in packs? No? well, the raptors were even dumber. No evidence have been found to suggest a pack. You really know very little about dinosaurs P. You probally watch barney and tele tubbies! what a LLLLLLOOOOOOOOSSSSSSEEEEEERRRRRRR! AH AH AH AHA
from ?, age ?, ?, ?, ?; November 19, 2000

I can't figure why you like Velociraptor. It got killed by a lousy Protoceratops! What a loser! At least Tyrannosaurus could kill Triceratops dead 100percent of the time.
from You are a loser, age ?, ?, ?, ?; November 19, 2000

P., you are out of line. You are obviously relying on outdated infomation. Whil;e you scream for your mama to make the votes for Velociraptor increase, T-rex gets more votes! HA HA HA HA HA!
from cALVIN, age 6, ?, ?, ?; November 19, 2000

If the raptors were so good, why the the Tyrannosauids drive them to extinction. ... You are just taking the bits you want and throwing away the parts that disagree with you. T.rex rulessssssss!
from Insaniac, age ?, ?, ?, ?; November 19, 2000

..., .... How on earth can a Velociraptor kill a T.rex. T.rex is so fast and agile and smart. Velociraptor stands no chance. The intelligence chart is actually wrong. Tyrannosaurus rex is the dominant predator of the deep woods (see Christopher Srnka's illustration of this lifestyle), its favorite prey being Triceratops horridus(see Brian Franczak's beautiful sketch of this)(see also Luis Ray's "The Chase")(see also John Bindon's painting "No Escape"). Armed with three large horns and a sharp beak, these elephant-sized herbivores are quite capable of killing a large tyrannosaur. To hunt these dangerous animals successfully, the T. rex have evolved a barrage of weapons designed to maim the prey before it can maim the predator. Unlike the varied teeth of a mammalian predator, most of the teeth of a predatory dinosaur are all similar in shape. The size of bananas, these teeth are serrated on the front and back and are intended to slice through flesh, rather than hold it. This arrangement is almost universal with predatory dinosaurs, but T. rex's jaws are of a slightly different construction. Scoop-shaped fangs are arranged in an arc at the front of the mouth. These teeth function rather like a cookie cutter, allowing a T. rex to scoop out large chunks of flesh from the belly or flank of a triceratops . Driven by roughly 3,000 pounds of force, a tyrannosaur's jaw severs muscles and crushes bone. The sudden depletion of blood, bone and muscle effectively cripples a T. horridus, allowed the tyrannosaur to eat at it leisure, with little or no threat to itself. This bleed-your-prey-to-death method is so efficient that it is the most commonly used form attack for almost all predatory dinosaurs. This has also arisen independently among several kinds of mammals, reptiles and fish. (see Gregory S. Paul's book, Predatory Dinosaurs of the World)(see also Jeff Poling's Tyrannosaur hunting techniques) Also, rather than chewing up-and-down like a mammal, a T. rex can slide its jaws forward and back, shearing its teeth across the meat. This action, unlike any other method of mastication, pulverizes the bone and gristle and renders the meat easily digestible. For a hunter that uses it's mouth and not its hands to hunt, construction of the skull is crucial to survival. T. rex proves this point with it's powerful, wonderfully designed jaws (

- In Jurassic Park, the terrified kids held perfectly still so a hungry celluloid Tyrannosaurus rex couldn't detect them. In reality, scientists say, they would've been lunch meat. CT-scanning of the desk-sized skull of Sue, the most complete T. rex fossil ever found, suggests the supreme carnivore in North America 65 million years ago had acute senses. Its forward-pointing eyes provided a wide field of view, and ear structures suggest it could hear well.

Characteristics: Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs. It was most likely an active hunter, but may have scavenged for food as well. T. rex was one of the last dinosaurs to live.

Current research has shown that Tyrannosaurus rex should be portrayed as a sleek, active carnivore, unlike older restorations that show it as a bulky tail-dragger. We now believe that its massive tail was held off the ground and served as a counterbalance as the animal ran. Surprisingly, this pose had been proposed decades earlier when the skeleton of the first T. rex (called Dynamosaurus imperiosus) was mounted in the British Museum (Natural History) in London.

One of the most popular dinosaurs, T. rex has been the star of movies ranging from "The Lost World" (1925) to "Jurassic Park" (1993) and "Jurassic Park: Lost World" (1996).

from JACOB R, age 9, ?, ?, ?; November 19, 2000

In the past decade, new interpretations of existing material have contributed to the resurgence ol dinomania, which will no doubt help this and many other palaeontological projects along. In 1990, K. Carpenter noted the high degree of variability in Tyrannosaurus skulls: `In fact, no two specimens are identical.' M. G. Lockley and A. P. Hunt reported in 1994 the discovery of an `unequivocal' Tyrannosaurus footprint from New Mexico. R. E. Barrick and W. I. Showers, also in 1994, attempted to show body-temperature of T. rex and, two years later, G. M. Erickson and K. H. Olson confirmed the notion that `on some occasions T. rex fed upon both Triceratops and Edmontosaurus, the two predominant herbivores from the late Cretaceous Western Interior lowland coastal plains', based on bite marks found on these respective genera. This has led to the suggestion, by Erickson and his colleagues in 1996, based on simulation and estimation of bite force, that the teeth of T. rex could `withstand large bite forces and sustain repetitive bone impacts, ... associated with prey struggles', which is useful in discussions of whether this creature was a true hunter or scavenger. But was T. rex the biggest and the baddest? A recent report by Sereno and others (1996) of a new tooth-marked bones, theropod from Africa, Carcharodontosaurus saharicus, states that this creature has a skull that `equals or exceeds the length of the largest known skull of Tyrannosaurus rex.'

The new specimen from Saskatchewan will, at least, provide additional material for the rather small Tyrannosaurus database. Possibly, the skeleton may answer a few questions already raised, and maybe raise a few more. The public will also be able to follow this process along by eventually seeing a mounted replica on display. And it is this more pronounced public awareness that has re-emerged as the source for continued viability of much in palaeontology. As R. Rainger has pointed out in summarizing the American Museum of Natural History efforts during Brown's and Osborn's time (1991): `The discoveries of dinosaurs were more than an important scientific development; they were of also a means for expanding the department's efforts in fieldwork, displays, and artistic and photographic reproduction.' Dinosaurs are the `in' thing.

Nickname: T. rex, "Tyrant Lizard King"

Age: Lived 85 to 65 million years ago during the late Cretaceous Period

Size: 40 feet long and as tall as a giraffe (15 to 20 feet tall, that is)

Weight: 5 to 7 tons-about the weight of an elephant

Characteristics: Large head Tiny arms Bipedal Big jaw and long teeth

Special Talents: Tyrannosaurus rex was a fierce predator with a jaw up to four-feet long and serrated teeth longer than a human hand. He could swallow more than 200 pounds of food in one bite!

Claim to fame: The first Tyrannosaurus rex fossil was discovered by the famous fossil hunter Barnum Brown in Hell Creek, Montana, in 1902. A huge, almost complete T. rex skeleton named "Sue" was found in South Dakota in August 1990 and sold to The Field Museum in Chicago for $7.6 million!xxx

C H I C A G O, May 25 - Scientists examining the largest Tyrannosaurus rex ever found said today they have discovered it had a particularly acute sense of smell, judging by olfactory bulbs the size of grapefruit in its skull.
The largest T. rex skull ever measures 5.5 feet long and contained a foot-long brain and olfactory glands the size of grapefruits.
(Chicago Field Museum)
"We knew they had a strong sense of smell but not to this degree," said Chris Brochu, a paleontologist at Chicago's Field Museum. The museum purchased the 45-foot-long near-complete skeleton of the T. rex, nicknamed "Sue," at auction in 1997 for $8.4 million.
"They probably had a very well-developed sense of vision and their hearing was probably very good, too. But their sense of smell was central to how they perceived the world around them," Brochu said.
Key Moment in Jurassic Park
The T. rex's sense of smell played a tense role in scenes in the nearly $1 billion grossing dinosaur fantasy movie Jurassic Park, directed by Steven Spielberg. The movie maker came to the Field Museum recently to view the specimen as it was being prepared for display, which is planned for May of next year.
In the film, characters confronted by a T. rex were instructed to hold still because they thought the beast could not detect them if they were not moving.
"We had an impromptu debate with (Spielberg) about that scene," said John Flynn, a geologist heading the Field Museum's corporate-funded effort to examine and display Sue.
With T. rex's highly developed olfactory sense, remaining still probably would not have saved the people, Flynn argued, adding that the movie makers were merely following the best research available at the time.

Found Via CT Scan
The discovery that Sue had grapefruit-sized olfactory bulbs, which tied together a network of nerves from the 67-million-year-old dinosaur's snout, was made with a CT scan that allowed scientists to obtain a three-dimensional image of the 5.5-foot-long skull's interior while preserving it.

CT scans revealed that Sue had huge olfactory bulbs, showing that T. rex relied on smell for hunting. (Chicago Field Museum)

Sue's foot-long brain, while not impressive, was larger than other dinosaurs' brains and about the size one would expect in such a large animal, Brochu said. Its acute sense of smell might have been employed to help the T. rex hunt down prey, or locate carcasses to scavenge, Brochu said, adding that he was skeptical about how much could be inferred about Sue's lifestyle. "Was it a predator or scavenger? Unanswerable, I don't think we'll ever know. Warm or cold blooded? We'll never know. Was it male or female? We'll never know," Brochu said.

Jaws (Yes, More Spielberg) But Sue's serrated, foot-long set of fearsome teeth, deeply anchored in its powerful jaws, would have armed it to tear apart live, struggling prey, Flynn said. The largest and most complete T. rex skeleton ever found, Sue was discovered in 1990 in a bluff in the South Dakota Badlands, near the town of Faith, by Sue Hendrickson. The 49-year-old Hendrickson, who is a lifelong amateur fossil-hunter, diver on shipwrecks and archaeological sites, and self-described lover of field work, said she was blessed with a sixth sense that led her to the discovery of her life. Hendrickson reaped no financial rewards from Sue. The money went to the rancher on whose land the skeleton was found. However, she said she hoped her discovery, the subsequent multimillion-dollar sale, and the upcoming travelling display of two Sue replicas would encourage more people to search for dinosaur fossils.

When I was a kid, I liked Tyrannosaurus rex simply because it was the biggest theropod. I remember feeling "threatened" when I read about the gigantic sizes of Deinocheirus and Theriznosaurus, and then relieved when they turned out to be an ornithomimid and segnosaur respectively. I also remember feeling the same way when claims of Allosaurus reaching lengths of 45 feet began circulating. (Of course, now I know that it is mass, not length that is a real measure of size. Diplodocus, at 90 feet, may be longer than Brachiosaurus, but there is no question which dinosaur is "bigger".).

Of course, with the discoveries of Giganotosaurus and Carcharadontosaurus, Tyrannosaurus rex really isn't the biggest theropod anymore. However, T. rex's place on the throne is secure, at least in my mind.

To me, Giganotosaurus and Carcharadontosaurus represent the last members of a long line of large predators that dominated the role of large predator for a good portion of the Mesozoic. These are the carnosaurs, of which Allosaurus is probably the most famous and most familiar member.

In T. rex, we have something different. Here, we have a group of dinosaurs (the coelurosaurs) that are more advanced (i.e. more birdlike) than the carnosaurs, but contains no members that pose a threat to the carnosaurs' hold on the giant predator niche. That is, until the late Cretaceous period in North America. At this time, the coelurosaurs "decide" to try their hand at giant super-predatordom. The result is fantastic. We see the emergence of the family Tyrannosauridae and eventually its culmination, Tyrannosaurus rex himself, an animal of huge size, massive power and surprising gracility. T. rex represents a major triumph of the coelurosaurs: the breaking away from the role of small to medium sized predator (and in many cases herbivore!) to the seizing of the role of giant super-theropod from the carnosaurs.

This is what makes Tyrannosaurus rex a winner. It's a dinosaur that beat the odds to become the most fearsome animal to walk the earth and was only undone by a major global extiction.
from Brad O., age 24, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; November 17, 2000

TYRANNOSAURUS REX!

THE tyrannosaurs were a group of large carnivorous dinosaurs that roamed North America and Asia during the last part of the Cretaceous, 85 to 65 million years ago. The most famous tyrannosaur, of course, is Tyrannosaurus rex, known to every schoolchild, and one of the last non-avian dinosaurs to walk the earth before the great extinction.

Just about two dozen good specimens of these animals have been found and these finds are from highly restricted areas in western North America. Henry Fairfield Osborn, of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, first described Tyrannosaurus rex in 1905. This first specimen of Tyrannosaurus is now on display at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The skeleton on display at UCMP is a cast of a skeleton (excavated in 1990) now in the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana. Skeletons of a close relative of T. rex, Tarbosaurus, have been found in Mongolia.

Clearly this animal was imposing in size and stature. In fact, T. rex was one of the largest terrestrial carnivores of all time. It stood approximately 15 feet high and was about 40 feet in length, roughly six tons in weight. In its large mouth were six-inch long, sharp, serrated teeth. Good T. rex specimens, however, are hard to come by - Berkeley's mount is 90% complete, one of the best specimens found to date. Some 15-20 other specimens around the country range from about 10% to 80% complete; missing ribs and tail bones are common.

Tyrannosaurus, a ruler of dinosaurs? Or are the other dinosaurs better?

Many people have been wanting to knock Tyrannosaurus off his throne, but lets examine the evidence more closely. Lets run through a few potential new king of dinosaurs, they are:

Pachycephalosaurus
Triceratops (the horned dinos in general)
The Raptors (Very Popular)

It had long been thought that Pachycephalosaurus' huge dome may have been used for ramming rivals during mating and dominance combat, for attracting mates, and as a last-ditch self-defense against predators (this idea was first presented by Ed Colbert in 1955).

Paleontologist Mark Goodwin of the University of California at Berkeley has analyzed many pachycephalosaur skulls (including those of Pachycephalosaurus), finding no evidence of healed scars. Also, under close analysis, the thick skull bone is not rigid and solid, but porous and fragile when put under extreme pressure. ``It's time to kill the myth ... It certainly wouldn't be in their own best interests to ram heads in a fight,'' said Goodwin ``They would have killed each other, and a couple of bowling balls would hardly make good targets.'' It is more likely that Pachycephalosaurus butted other animals sides (flank-butting), rather than their heads. This would inflict damage on the other animal and not injure the Pachycephalosaurus. But it appears that Pachycephalosaurus is not as formidible as we had eariler thought.

The end is near for all unbalanced Pachycephalosaurus fans.

Lets move on to Triceratops (the ceratopsians in general)

The second most popular dinosaur in the world. Some even claimed it could have rivaled Tyrannosaurus. (As alot of dinosaur pictures show) But is this true? Well, I have to admit two one-meter long daggers do look interesting and deadly, but the question is? Did Triceratops use it for defence.

Now, with the light of increasing evidence, we now know that this is unlikely. The ceratopsians in general have huge holes to make their frill lighter, with Triceratops being the exception. A large skin covered hole...not too go for defence is is?

Okay, lets get back to Triceratops. Triceratops, like all ceratopsians, have a relatively stiff neck, meaning (as they found out recently) they could not move it too much. Making it good for defending into the frontal arc, but leaving a nice, juicy exposed behind. Even worse, Triceratops could probally not gore the attacker as being a quadiped, it was far clumslier than a biped (alk.T.rex) predator. Even even Worse! Horns are better known as display equipment, not weapons used all the time to fend off predators. Just how many times have you seen a bufflao gore a lion? Horns look threatening, but have little use in battle as the chances of an attack coming from the frontal arc of Triceratops is unlikely. (T.rex was smart enough to know that)No scars or wounds have been found on the horns of Triceratops, or infact, wear on the tips! Which you would get if you used it often.

So how did Triceratops defend itself? Well, by display of course! But if T.rex is hungry and undetered, the Triceratops had better run away. If Triceratops was so powerful, then I guess it wouldn't need to stay around in a herd. But herds are common ceratopsians telling us they weren't as sercure as we thought. Even more damming. All the Tyrannosaurus skeletons found showed scars from battles with each other and ankylosaurs (just about the only animal who dares to face T.rex) but none from Triceratops or the ceratopsians. The converse is true for Triceratops. Hip bones of Triceratops have been found with Tyrannosaurus bite marks on them. Even more embarrasing. Triceratops has been dug out from the dung of rex!

The end is near for Triceratops(ceratopsians ) fans

Now how about the raptors? Those pack hunting, meat eating dinosaurs would have easily overpowerd a Tyrannosaur right, using their sickle claws? Well, bad news. New studies have shown that Raptors did not have very strong muscles in their toe claws. They could swing it yes, but not powerfully, meaning they could scratch, but not slash with it.

While we used to imagine the Mesozoic world as a landscape of sluggish swampdwellers, we now envision a world populated by a panoply of colorful, noisy, fast and cunning hot-blooded monsters. This is great for the Dinobiz, but does it make scientific sense? Did Dinosaurs operate under rules of physiology and evolutionary pressure substantially different from those of today? Did they develop markedly better solutions for dealing with their world than those that have evolved since? Let's look at the currently hot group, Dromaeosaurs, popularly known today as the Raptors. In movies, books and magazines these smallish theropods comprised the fastest and nastiest, and possibly smartest Dinosaurs ever. They were dressed to the nines in spikes and knives; cold-blooded homeothermic killers. While all members of this class had an impressive set of saw-edged teeth and formidably clawed forelimbs, it is the hypertrophied claws on the second toes of their hindlimbs that have transfixed our imagination. We are repeatedly told that these agile carnivores hunted in packs, slashing their large but lumbering prey to death in a series of back-foot blitzkriegs. Wait...does this really make sense? Did they really hunt in organized packs? Did they really use those curvaceous claws for slicing and dicing formidable foes into hors-d'ouvres sized snacks? I suspect it was more likely they rarely ate anything that couldn't have been nailed in a one-bite solo effort unless it was already dead. Heresy!!? Stop and consider this from an evolutionary standpoint. As Raptors were lightly built, they probably did rely on speed and agility. As they were bipedal, their back legs would have been essential to their survival. Almost any injury to such important structures would have been rapidly fatal to a creature relying on pursuit speed and kicking power. Want to hurt a back leg? Try to kick a large and angry herbivore that basically consists of thick skin over huge muscles. Ribs, pe! lvic bones, scutes, shields and flailing limbs would have made vital organs difficult targets. Aside from the likely humiliation of breaking a nail, they would have been at high risk for shattering a leg trying such tactics. Crippled dinosaurs didn't have a high likelihood of reproducing, leaving them losers in Darwin's evolutionary derby. Perhaps that is why they vanished by the mid-Cretaceous, giving way to the smash-mouth hunting tactics of the Tyrannosaurs. It is more likely that Raptors mostly used their razor-like teeth on smaller prey. If they did use claws, it was probably the impressive armament on their forelimbs which would have been much easier to control and less risky to survival if injured. So, what were those carpet cutters for? If there had to be a feeding function, consider other possibilities. They would have been useful for cutting through thick skin after their meal h! ad been immobilized by other means. They could have been used to rip aprt termite nests and beehives, or to dig up whatever resembled prairie dog towns of their era. If they had a taste for escargot, the claws were perfectly shaped for extracting the delicate morsels from their spiral shells.

I'm certain that every reader who has put up with me this far is thinking about the famous Velociraptor versus Protoceratops fossil where both died locked in mortal combat, proving the function of the slashing claw. Yes, the poor Raptor was using its foot, but probably as a defensive weapon! After all, it was probably trying to raid a nest for a meal of one-bite babies when it was attacked by one of those angry herbivores alluded to above. The large slashing claw on the cassowary is a good example of such a weapon evolving purely for defensive purposes. These birds are incredibly dangerous when trapped in close quarters although they are more likely to run away than take chances with their valuable legs in a battle. It makes sense to risk an incapacitating injury only if the alternative is being eaten.

If you are uncomfortable with these magnificent structures solely serving a protective function, what could be a more likely use? Why, sex of course. Many of the most extravagant and bizarre structures in nature are primarily used to attract a mate or to intimidate rivals. A set of large claws could be very useful for displaying to a potential mate or for ritualized combat. Look at the modern rooster, possessing impressive and dangerous spurs, but hardly famed as a fierce hunter.

While difficult to prove either way, it is easier to imagine Raptors having the coordination required for mating displays than the control needed for accurately kicking an opponent in a life or death battle. Despite their reputation for having relatively large brains, it is unlikely that such complex coordination would have been possible. No other animal has developed that style of hunting since, even if birds grab smaller prey with their feet and many animals do use their feet for defensive functions. While on the subject of brain function, I have to add that the concept of Raptors hunting in organized packs inspires incredulity. No reptile, or bird for that matter possesses the social structure to accomplish that and it is doubtful that Dinosaurs with relatively small brain-to-body mass ratios could have pulled it off. Swarming on common prey is observed with many animals including crocodilians, large lizards and vultures, although it isn't truly cooperative social behavior.! ! Finding fossils showing a group of Deinonychus with one large herbivore certainly doesn't prove or even imply social structure any more than finding a collection of flies around a dead rat.

Little evidence of the raptors' seemingly formidible behaviour have been found, yet there is so much hype. Even many paleontologists got sucked into this lie.

The end is near for all raptor fans.

Now, you might ask, what about Tyrannosaurus? Well, as I said, if you're up there, people hitch a quick ride to fame by rising an issue about you. Jack Horner, a paleontologist who revived the victorian view of Tyrqannosaurus being a full time scavenger was pretty much a non-person until he rasied this theory. While I cannot spectulate on his true intentions, his misinfomation set off a series of chain reactions which led to even more misinfomation.

Well, this is starting to clear up. There is a saying that goes "If it's true, you will find it there." Well, those scavenger theorists keep raise many things, all based on sketchy an unreliable infomation. The unkindest cut of all. T.rex had fragile teeth. Some "paleontologists" said that T.rex would have had a jaw full off broken and missing teeth if it had used it to attack prey. Of cousre, they didn't bother to figure how did the fact that T.rex had such powerful jaws fit in. Having powerful jaws with weak teeth? What nonsense! Well, discoveries of DEEP t.rex bite marks have really killed this theory dead.

Well, you could say that Rexy could have dined on a dead animal, leaving a bite mark. But guess again. TO find true evidence of predatory behaviour, we must find evidence of unsucessful attacks. An Edmontosaur skeleton was found with hust that. A Tyrannosaurus tooth tip sticking in its hip. The wound had healed, indicating that the Edmontosaur had a run in with a Tyrannosaur and survived. Indicating predatory behaviour. More evidence of Tyrannosaurus attack survivors have emerged, really, really killing the scavenger theory dead. I would like to contuine, but it would be beating a dead horse. Of course, you could still agrue that he was a scavenger, this is america, you can do anything you like, but I warn you, nobody will take you seriously.

Of course T.Rex wasn't a full time hunter, but I will like to tell you that:
