Parts of Speech Word Wheel

Make a wheel about the eight parts of speech using this 2-page print-out; it consists of a base page together with a wheel that spins around. When you spin the wheel, the parts of speech appear together with a definition and two examples. The parts of speech are: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. The student then writes down the parts of speech and an example for each.

Alliteration is the repetition of initial sounds in neighboring words. "Slithering snake" is an alliteration because both word start with the "s" sound. "Notable knight" is an alliteration because both word start with the "n" sound (even though they start with different letters).

An anagram is a word or phrase that is made by rearranging the letters of another word. For example, spot is an anagram of post.

A compound word is a word that is made up of two or more other words. For example, the word dragonfly is made up of two words, dragon and fly. Read some common compound words and do activities on compound words.

Contractions

A contraction is a shortened form of one or two words (usually verbs). Some contractions are: I'm (I am), can't (cannot), how's (how is), and Ma'am (Madam).


Antonyms/Opposites

Opposites (antonyms) are things that are very, very different from each other. Some examples of opposites are: left and right, big and small, up and down, tall and short.

Homophones are words that sound like one another but have different meanings, like flower and flour.

Punctuation Marks

Punctuation marks are symbols that are used in sentences and phrases to make the meaning clearer. Some punctuation marks are the period (.), comma (,), question mark (?), exclamation point (!), colon (:) and semicolon(;). A simile is a way of describing something by comparing it to something else, often using the word "like" or "as." For example, "He is as brave as a lion." Read common similes and do activities on similes.

Metaphor

A metaphor is a way of describing something by equating it with something else. It is a comparison between two different things that have an important characteristic in common. For example, in the metaphor, "Freddie is a pig when he eats," both Freddie and a pig are sloppy eaters.
